David and Jonathan

Devotion:1 Samuel 18:1-5

Do you have friends that love you; as much as they love themselves? Your souls are knit together with theirs.  You’ve done life together for many years.  You may have had a disagreement but nothing has been able to form a wedge between you.  You would give your life for your “Jonathan” type friends.

“Jonathan friends are God-ordained life time friendships.  They are not fair weather friends.  When a storm barrels into your life; they are there.  When the storm doesn’t go away; they are still there.  In fact; they counsel you and pray with you and for you, till death do you part.

Everyone should have at least one.  God has blessed me with several.  He’s been faithful and so kind, to pour out this type of lovingkindness upon me.

Jesus said in John 15:14, “You are My friends, if you do what I command you.”  Jesus calls us His friends.  He is an amazing Jonathan type friend.  He does not grow weary with you.  He will never leave you nor forsake you.  He doesn’t consider you a bother.  He will always walk beside you; through every trial and tribulation.  He is an amazing counselor, teacher and friend. My dear reader; He laid down His life for yours.

There’s an old hymn that says, “What a friend we have in Jesus. All out sins and griefs to bear.  What a privilege to carry, everything to God in prayer.  Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?  Take it to the Lord in prayer.  Jesus knows our every weakness.  Take it to the Lord in prayer.”

You see, the Lord will connect your heart together with a few people.  Jesus did most of His life with twelve ordinary men.  One betrayed Him in the end. Peter denied knowing Him not once, not twice but three times.

Remember, God is with you always.  He who knit you in your mother’s womb and drew you to Himself, loves you with an everlasting love.  You will always have at least one Jonathan friend in Christ.

Prayer in Motion:

Lord, thank you for being my Jonathan friend, who laid down your life for mine.  I love you Lord Jesus.  Lord as I live in these latter days, may I be willing to lay down my life for You.  In Jesus precious and Holy Name; I offer up this prayer.  Amen
