Spiritual Benefits to Suffering

Standard

Devotion: 2 Corinthians 12:8

All of us have prayed to come out from under our suffering.  Paul said, he prayed three times that the Lord would deliver him from his infirmity.  The saints of the Bible experienced much suffering and pain.

Suffering tenderizes and prepares our hearts for God to work in our lives.  The trials and tribulations God brings into our lives cause us to cry out to God in prayer.  We pour into the pages of God’s Word as our lifeline; as we search for answers and comfort.

We develop patience when we wait upon the Lord to answer our prayers.  He directs our steps and orders our path.  When emotional or physical pain becomes intense;  our minds can be deceived into thinking God has abandoned us.  He promised to “never leave us nor forsake us.”  During times of suffering; we have to grab hold of His promises and His truth.  We must believe God is enough and trust Him with and in the pain.

There’s an old song that says, “When you can’t trace His hand; trust His heart.”  Our Jesus Himself learned obedience through the things He suffered.  WE know our Lord is fully God and fully man. We know He identified with man’s pain and suffering because of what He suffered on our behalf.  He knows your pain and is always there to see you through it all.

God allows suffering to teach us compassion and mercy.   How else can we minister to hurting people; if we’ve never experienced any kind of deep pain or discomfort?  Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  Extend comfort in the same way you have been comforted.

Our God will not put more upon you than you can stand.  After having done all, “Stand and see the salvation of the Lord.” He will not allow you to be defeated.  Will you trust that your current suffering is building perseverance, character and hope?  Will you allow God to use what Satan meant for evil, for your good and His glory?  We can do as Paul, “boast about our weaknesses”…We can even delight in “insults, hardships, persecutions and difficulties, For when we are weak, then He is strong.”

Prayer in Motion:

Oh God, my hope is in You and You alone.  You are enough to see me through this valley of pain and suffering.  You will accomplish what concerns me.  I want to be trained in righteousness.  May it not be in vain.  Even in this, I trust You Lord Jesus.  It’s in Your Name I offer up this prayer.  Amen!
