In Nancy Demoss’s book called Surrender; she tells the story of our Christian brothers and sisters in Indonesia who are paying an enormous price to follow Christ. She states, “In specific villages that have been taken over by militant Muslims, Christians who refuse to convert to Islam are being “allowed” to leave their villages. The cost of that freedom is that they must forsake their homes and everything they own, to never return to their villages.”
American Christians cannot conceive of being required to literally forsake everything for the sake of Christ. We could face this scenario in the not so distant future.
There’s a couple of old hymns, “I Surrender All, and He is all I need.” However, when we begin to contemplate the reality of those words; we could become gripped with fear. Could you give up the things you consider most important in your life?
All that’s within our American blood, wants to protect and preserve the things we believe we cannot live without. It involves relinquishing control of every area of our lives; our health, our material possessions, our family, our reputation, our career plans, all our rights and our future.
We have many examples in our Bibles, but one such person who forsook all was Abraham. He forsook the comfort of his own home, his family/friends, as well as his comfort zone. He was faced with a choice; to stay or go. In Genesis 12:1 God says to Abram: “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household.” In verse four we read, “So Abram left, as the Lord had told him.” No questions asked. He just got up and went.
Friendship with God is more important than any other earthly friendship. Now Abraham had a few occasional lapses of faith but he kept going. When he could not see the outcome of his faith; he kept going. A faithful God had promised he would be the father of many nations. He remained childless for more than twenty five years.
Are you willing to forsake all to follow Christ? Wherever He leads; will you go?
Prayer in Motion:
Lord, help me to forsake all others and follow You. You are a faithful God. Faithful are You who has called us. You will bring to pass what You have promised. Thank You Lord. I worship You today in Spirit and in the knowledge of Your faithfulness. I love You and worship You Jesus. It’s in Your precious Name I pray. Amen.
