Someone said, “What we hold onto; holds onto us.” Ask the woman whose husband has had an affair. Her life feels left in ruin. He says he no longer loves her but someone else. The hate and betrayal she holds onto, holds onto her. Anger turns to bitterness and bitterness to the cancer of despair. Christians are not to despair as those who have no hope.
Ask the person who has been obsessed with climbing the corporate ladder and is passed over for his or her very coveted job. This man or woman can choose to become filled with jealousy and bitterness toward the person who was given “his or her” job.
Ask the couple who had to file for bankruptcy. As their debt continued to mount; now it holds them in captivity.
In this passage God is asking us to hold onto wisdom; instead of our anger, our hate, our bitterness; all those things that have been done to us.
“Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go,”
“God tells us to be angry…” (Anger is a viable emotion. Even Jesus got angry.) The end of the verse on anger states, “…and sin not.” That verse is found in Ephesians 4:26. We live in an unfair world. Life is not fair.
God is at work in you; to accomplish His purpose and His plan.
You cannot take firm hold of the wisdom God has spoken; while still holding onto anger and bitterness. They refuse to co-exist. Your heart can keep one or the other; however, there is not room for both. The last part of today’s verse exhorts us:
“Do not let go (of instruction) keep her, for she is your life.”
Verses 11-12 of Proverbs 4 tell us; “I have taught you in the way of wisdom, I have led you in right paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hindered. And when you run, you will not stumble.”
Let it go! Release the anger, bitterness and wrath to God. If held onto; those three emotions can bring you down spiritually, emotionally and physically. You are held captive while the offender goes free. You must draw a line in the sand and say: “NO MORE!”
Hold onto the “Wisdom of the ages;” the Lord your God. He is holding onto you.
Prayer in Motion:
Oh God, I give _________________ to You today. I want to hold onto You and release all others. My life and time is in Your Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnipresent hands. “Give me beauty for ashes, strength for fear, gladness for mourning and peace for despair.” As I hold onto You; You hold onto me. I love You Lord. In Jesus Name. Amen”
