The Lord is With You

Devotion:  Genesis 39:2-3,5,21,23

Five times this passage announces, “The Lord was with Joseph.”  How encouraging!  Joseph was like David, “a man after God’s own heart.”  Potiphar entrusted Joseph with every single thing in his household.  He knew he could trust this man, whom the Lord was with.  Joseph was smart, strong, successful and above all else, trustworthy.  It seems Potiphar loved Joseph like a son.  Why?  Because after Mrs. Potiphar accused Joseph of “mocking her;”  Potiphar only put him in prison.  According to the laws of that time; this young man should have been killed.

“But the LORD was with Joseph.”

Joseph was a man of integrity.  He was loved unconditionally; by his father, his master, who happened to be an officer of Pharaoh, and most importantly, his God.

How do we know the LORD was with Joseph?

Verse 2:   He was a successful man who resided in the house of                 his master.

Verse 3:   His master had observed the LORD was with Joseph.

Verse 4:   The LORD made all Joseph did to prosper in his hand.

Verse 5:   Potipher made Joseph the overseer in his house.

Verse 5:   The LORD blessed Potiphar’s house for Joseph’s                         sake…all he had in the house and in the field.

Joseph’s life seemed to be an emotional roller coaster of ups and downs.  According to Genesis 37:3, his earthly father loved him more than all the other brothers, which created a huge chasm of jealousy.  The Bible tells us in verse 4; his brothers hated him.

God spoke to Joseph in a dream.  The dream was so vivid; that Joseph begged his brothers to hear it.  Every juicy detail can be found in chapter 37.  The whole dream does seem to be a bit preposterous.  Although a hard pill for them to swallow; his whole family would bow down to him in the future.   Joseph’s dream was indeed prophetic.

Although Joseph seemed to be “hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed;” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9) Joseph never caved.

He knew The LORD was with him.

  •     God was with him in the pit.
  •     God was with him as he was sold into slavery.
  •     God was with him as Potipher bought Joseph.
  •     God was with Joseph as he was placed over Potipher’s                house.
  •     God was with Joseph; even when he was falsely accused.
  •     God was with Joseph as he went to prison even though he          was not guilty of molesting Mrs. P.

My dear reader; the LORD God was with Joseph and I pray you know:  The LORD is with you.

  •      God is with you in the pit.
  •      God is with you in your sorrow.
  •      God is with you in your trouble.
  •      God is with you in the prisons of your own making; as well            as the prisons, to which others have unjustly enslaved you.
  •      God is with you on your job.
  •      God is with you always.

Prayer in Motion:

LORD God, thank You for being with me both now and always. Thank You for the knowledge that Your hand is upon me; as I go out and come in. I will not despair what man can do to me.   I love You LORD.  In Jesus Name.  Amen
