The Substitute

Standard

Devotion:  Acts 1:15-26

In Elementary School, I loved one of our substitute teachers.  In particular; she was a short, round, older lady; whose name was Mrs. McNeely.  She was the best story- teller ever!  She had traveled the world and we kids had inquiring minds. We delighted to ask her questions regarding her travels.  When Mrs. McNeely opened her mouth;  the students would find themselves transported to the places she had visited; all through her descriptive imagery.

substitute is a person or thing acting or serving in place of another.  Judas the betrayer was numbered among the twelve disciples. He had walked with the disciples through out the time of Jesus’ ministry.  However;

                    “…another would take his office.”

If we betray our friend, our boss, an organization; we can easily be replaced.  God always has another person who is ready and willing to step up and take our place.  In this case; the lot fell on a man named Matthias.

We know nothing more about this man; other than he was chosen to replace Judas. There were only a few requirements.

  1.     The man had to have accompanied the disciples all through          out the time of Jesus ministry, from the time of His baptism          till the time of HIs resurrection.
  2.      He must have witnessed Christ’s resurrection.
  3.      The disciples prayed to God and asked that He show them          between the two proposed men, Joseph and Matthias; who          was to take the place of Judas. Matthias was chosen as his          substitute.

                            Jesus became our substitute,

dying in our place, for our sins. There was no other; who could take on the sins of the whole world, so that we could have abundant life on earth and eternal life in heaven.

Prayer in Motion:

Thank You Lord for becoming my substitute, taking on my sins, dying in my place, so that I could have abundant life while on earth and eternal life with You in heaven.  There is no other name in heaven or on earth by which men may be saved or kept. I worship You in Spirit and in Truth.  I love You Lord Jesus.  Amen!
