Community

Standard

Devotion:  Leviticus 19:18

We hear this word a lot in Christian circles; as well as in the media. (Community)  How do we accomplish community?  Webster defines community in this way:

the people with common interests living in a particular area; broadly :  the area itself <the problems of a large community>c :  an interacting population of various kinds of individuals (as species) in a common location d :  a group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society <a community of retired persons> <a monastic community>social activity :  fellowship d :  a social state or condition <The school encourages a sense of community in its students.>

The last definition peeks my interest.  The Greek Word for fellowship is Koinonia.

Strong’s Greek: 2842. κοινωνία (koinónia) — fellowship – Bible Hub

Definition: (lit: partnership) (a) contributory help, participation, (b) sharing in, communion, (c) spiritual fellowship, a fellowship in the spirit.

As a Christian; do you have community; a safe place you gather with other believers; to study and share what God is doing in your life? How I pray that you do.  That’s the means by which we grow in our faith-walk and encourage one another.  No man is an island.
Often; worldly people get the idea of community better than the we Christians.  They gather with like minded people in the local bars for their fellowship.  The need for “community” is met.  How do we reach out to the communities in which we live?
My friend Neil Perry began something called C-4 groups in the Rutherford/Cleveland county areas.  It’s a small group of people from your community or neighborhood that gather once a week to examine God’s Word.  It’s so easy.  The leader reads a passage from 2-3 translations.  He or she tells the story in her own words and then asks several questions.
*     What does the passage say about God?
*     What does it say about man?
*     Is there a command to obey?
*     Is there a promise to keep?
*     Is there a sin to avoid?
By the time you have done all those things, everyone will have a clear understanding of the passage.  It opens up the floor for conversation and ultimately; will lead the person or family to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.  Now that my friend, is loving your neighbor as yourself. That creates true community among the lost and the saved.
Prayer in Motion:
Lord Jesus, please help me to be responsible and develop the community You intended for me.  I want to create a sense of community in order to accomplish Your kingdom purposes.  I want Your will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.
