I absolutely love all the stories about David, from the time he was a shepherd boy until he became a King. How does one go from being a shepherd of sheep to being one of the greatest kings to ever rule and reign on this earth?
He was the son of Jesse. Who is Jesse? He was a farmer and a sheep breeder, the son of Boaz and Ruth. In his lineage, would be Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God. I love verse 23 which says, “From this man’s seed, according to the promise, God raised up for Israel a Savior – Jesus.”
David killed lions and bears. As a boy he killed a giant with one little stone and a sling shot. He performed amazing feats. The Bible says; “Saul has slain his thousands and David his ten thousands.”
David was not without sin. He brought a man named Uzziah home from war because David had slept with Uzziah’s wife, Bathsheba. David; not being where he was supposed to be, was gazing upon her from his high roof top. “Take heed where you stand lest you fall.”
He fulfilled the lust in his heart and Bathsheba became pregnant. This “man after God’s own heart,” tried to cover up his sin by having Uzziah come home and sleep with his wife. That didn’t work out. Uzziah came home but was so true to his soldier calling; he refused to sleep with his wife. Plan B didn’t work so David had Uzziah killed, by placing him on the front lines of the war. One sin calls for another and another.
In 2 Samuel 12:1-7 God had David called out by an old prophet named Nathan. God refuses to allow even His choicest of servants to get away with or cover up their sins. He says, “Be sure your sins will find you out.” That’s true for the lowest of shepherds as well as the greatest of kings. That’s the kind of God we serve. He is a God of love but He’s also a just God.
Prayer in Motion:
Oh God, may I be a man or woman after your own heart. I want to know You, the way David knew You. I want to serve You the way He served You. I want to know You and be known by You. God please anoint me and help me to do great and mighty things for Your kingdom, for Your praise, for Your honor, for Your glory and for Your blessing. It all belongs to You Lord. I love You Lord. In Jesus Name. Amen
