What Lies Beneath

Devotion:  Romans 8:26

It feels good to get a re-fresh done on your house.  My husband and I have been painting for what seems like forever and still lack one bedroom and most of the doors and trim.  Ben is the more meticulous one between the two of us and has done an amazing paint job.

We are putting in new countertops. When ripping out the old tile ones; there was a small amount of mold behind the wall tile in the kitchen.  Pulling off the old reveals what’s going on underneath.

We will have our old cabinets painted next week and new flooring put down as well.  Our twenty year old carpet will no longer come clean. There’s lots of stains and who knows what’s growing underneath the carpet and padding?  I first typed groaning (which may be true of what lies beneath this yucky carpet.) Think cartoon characters.  Scary, right?  The carpet will be pulled out and we have high hopes that it will help my asthma.

In today’s scripture, we discover that God’s Holy Spirit groans for us with groans beyond what words can express.  Our fleshly groans can actually lead to growth in our spirit.  What God allows in our lives; the physical pain, the emotional drain and the spiritual change; can turn out for our good and His glory.  In the end; if we are willing to allow Him to expose what lies beneath; He will use it to train us in righteousness.  Oh God; may we be trained by those things that need to be exposed.

Acts 3:19 say: “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”

Prayer in Motion:

Oh Lord Jesus, expose what lies beneath the outward appearance.  I want to grow in Your grace and in Your knowledge Lord.  Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me. Speak that my soul may hear what You have to say.  May I be quick to obey, that times of refreshing may come to my soul.
